Irene Hizme Testimony
The Holocaust was the mass murder of six millions Jews and millions of other people during World War II. This period of time took place in Europe between 1933 and 1945. All the killings were organized by the German Nazi party which was led by Adolf Hitler. Most of their victims were killed because they belonged to certain racial or religious groups which the Nazis wanted to wipe out. As this happened, children at this time were suffering too. This catastrophe left thousands of kids in Europe orphaned and homeless. Most of these infants came from Germany, Austria, Poland and other countries already occupied by the Nazis and they were brought there because their parents had been murdered or deported. In this place, the children were schooled and trained according to their ages, and were given special training in physical education and survival skills to be prepared for possible dangers ahead. Children who were inhabiting these orphanages had to wear a “tattoo” or a number in their skins for them to be identified. At the end of the war, many of these children were never told of their previous lives and prior identities. Here is where the testimony of Irene Hizme can be discussed.
Irene Hizme, a woman of Teplice Sanov, Czechoslovakia, described very briefly how she arrived to the Fublaines orphanage and also talked very shortly about how she lived there. Irene said that she got shipped into France and finally wound up into an orphanage in Fublaines. Ms. Hizme said that she was the youngest kid in there and that she only spoke to her friend Miriam. She affirmed that she was the only child in the orphanage with a number and for this she felt she had done something horrible. And finally she said that most people had escaped somehow by hiding.
To begin with, I believe the topic of this testimony is the Holocaust, as Irene was part of an orphanage in Fublaines because her parents were killed in Auschwitz due to the war. On the other hand, what this woman is telling us relates to the topic of this testimony because she was a jew who lived in an anti - Semitic era, which was the Second World War. This testimony can somehow teach me how important it is the life of a child with his parents, because by this writing Irene tries to convey how hard it was for her to live without her parents in an orphanage. And also how hard was for her to separate from her brother Rene Guttmann. Innocence of children is the principal theme that Irene´s testimony reflects.
In conclusion, I think reading and reporting this type of experiences is really important for knowing how was the daily life of people, how they were treated, how was their life with their families, in that really big episode, which was the Holocaust. Also it is a story, through which we can learn the innocence and importance of kids in our daily basis.
